Examining environmental management in the automotive and auto parts industry from a multidisciplinary perspective on work is essential—both because of the socio-ecological challenges involved and because of the industry’s economic and employment significance in strategic regions such as Querétaro, Mexico. This book therefore aims to shed light on the relationship between the sociotechnical configuration and environmental management in Querétaro’s auto parts sector. It explores the degree of participation of the various actors involved, within the broader context of global transformations in the automotive industry and the ongoing environmental crisis.
The study applies a configurationist methodology rooted in the sociology of work. This approach makes it possible to analyze multiple levels simultaneously, examine the ambiguities and contradictions between environmental discourse and actual practice, and highlight the structural–subjective–action dynamics that shape the emerging configuration. The findings show that local environmental management is shaped by pressures from multiple forces, particularly market dynamics, which strongly condition company behavior and often generate tensions between public commitments and operational practices. While the sector as a whole has made significant efforts in this area, there remains room for improvement—especially regarding the influence and participation of key stakeholders such as workers and unions.
